Miss Hancock, Mrs Kitchen, Mrs Crossley, Miss Riley and I would like to welcome you to Year 6 at Wakefield Methodist (VC) Junior, Infant and Nursery School.

Year 6 marks the children’s final year at our school and is when we prepare for their transition to high school. Our biggest aim is to ensure that your child leaves here as an independent learner who is ready to take on all the amazing opportunities that high school has to offer. This year is packed with exciting and challenging opportunities where we strive to develop the children’s self-help skills so that they have the ability to not only look for answers but also raise questions to enhance their learning. We work extremely hard in Year 6, but have lots of fun along the way.

We have some great topics to look forward to this year including: ‘Meet the Greeks', ‘What Mr Darwin Saw’, ’Shackleton’s Journey’ and a local study comparing Thornes in the Victorian era to the current day and we make regular visits to the West Yorkshire Archive centre to support us with understanding the history of the local area.

Obviously, SATs are an important part of Year Six, however we do not want them to become a worry for anyone. We will do lots of activities throughout the year both within class and as homework that will support your child. Added to this, from January we run a breakfast club one morning a week where the children enjoy working together to improve their knowledge whilst enjoying a slice of toast or two!!

Pupils in Year Six are actively encouraged to embrace the many leadership opportunities that arise across the year. So, as well as becoming leaders of both the School Council and Collective Worship group, pupils, children can apply to become a school ambassador and are actively involved in the running of many events including Pancake Racing, Egg Rolling and the Reindeer Run.

Sport is an important part of Year 6 and all children will have the opportunity to represent the school in a range of sports competitions as well as run activities for our younger children at lunchtime in their role of sports leaders.

In the Summer Term of Year 6 we have the opportunity to participate in our school residential experience at Robinwood, this is a fantastic residential and I can personally recommend it (It's the best residential I've ever been on!). Added to this, we have the Year Six Production and 'Party on the Pitch' to look forward to.

Be sure to check out the school Twitter feed (@MrsEarnshaw1) as updates are posted on a regular basis.

We are really looking forward to a great year with your children; if you have any concerns or worries, please feel free to come in and see me or get in touch via the school office
